Angelo Sambunaris, M.D. is Founder and Medical Director of the Brain Health and Wellness Clinic as well as the Institute for Advanced Medical Research (formerly the Atlanta Institute of Medicine & Research) and the Institute for Veterans Health, all of which are located in the metro Atlanta area. He also serves as a clinical faculty member at Mercer University’s School of Pharmacy.
Dr. Sambunaris previously directed psychiatric clinical research for Bayer Pharmaceuticals and Solvay Pharmaceuticals in the areas of anxiety and depression. He has been a principal investigator in more than 200 studies on the treatment of anxiety, depression, insomnia, and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as research in adult and adolescent ADHD, smoking cessation, migraine headaches, and personality disorders. The lead author on one of the FETZIMA pivotal trial publications, Dr. Sambunaris is regularly sought out by news media as an expert in psychiatric research, depression, insomnia, and research ethics.
Dr. Sambunaris completed his medical degree and residency in psychiatry at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. He completed a clinical research fellowship while a staff fellow at the W.A.W. Neuropsychiatric Research Hospital at the National Institute of Mental Health in Washington, DC.
His military service includes time in the U.S. Army as a combat medic and later as an officer, completing his military service as a Major in the Medical Corps. Dr. Sambunaris also served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Public Health Service while performing his fellowship at the NIMH. He is a recipient of several military awards, including the National Defense Service Medal.
Dr. Sambunaris is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association, Association of Clinical Research Professionals and the Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research and is a Certified Physician Investigator through this organization. He has presented and published primarily in the field of depression and anxiety, as well as methodological issues relating to clinical research and drug development.
Sheila Namanworth, D.M.D. is VP and Wellness Officer for the Brain Health and Wellness Clinic at the Institute for Advanced Medical Research and is dedicated to optimizing quality of healthcare through an innovative, forward-thinking and preventive approach which includes conventional and complementary approaches to health and well-being.
In her role at the clinic, Dr. Namanworth facilitates community outreach and programming, acts as a liaison with sponsors and affiliates and leads education efforts. Her background includes Research Assistant, National Institute of Mental Health, Washington D.C., Research Specialist, Yale University, Department of Psychology, New Haven, CT, and Doctor of Dental Surgery, Medical College of Georgia.
